Sponsored by Oak it was the 11th annual running of the popular event which saw 14 teams competing on a warm Saturday afternoon that made the plunge into the waterhole somewhat less unbearable.
Adrian and Amanda had won the Wife Carrying event held at the Bellingen Show earlier in the year and are now looking forward to representing Australia at the world titles that are held in Finland next July.
“We entered the Bellingen wife carry event as a bit of fun and we like a good physical challenge,” Adrian said.
“The day was so much fun and a real highlight was meeting all the other competitors, they were so friendly and supportive.
“We were pretty nervous all day as the competition looked very tough.
“During the race all I could think of was ‘why am I going so slow’. I felt I was running slow.
“We plan on getting pretty serious and training hard ... to also win all that beer.”
Adrian and Amanda covered the course in 103:96 three seconds faster than the Singleton pair Candice Cameron and Luke Wise.
This is the second year in a row that Candice and Luke have come second.
“We were five seconds faster this year but still lost by three seconds – have to make it third time lucky,” said Luke.
The couple Candice a physiotherapist and Luke who is currently stationed at the Singleton Army Base will soon be moving to Brisbane as Luke transfers bases with the army.
“But we will definitely be back in 2017 and we will win,” he said.
Third placed was Newcastle couple and first time entrants were Megan MacAuslan and Rhyan Bassett who both work at Williamtown’s RAAF base.
They told The Argus it was a great thrill to come third with zero training.
Megan a medic and Rhyan an aircraft mechanic both reckon its a fabulous competition.
“We had so much fun,” said Megan.
