The Environment Protection Authority have conducted an investigation into the incident and now issued Bulga Coal a Penalty Notice – $15,000 fine.
A company spokesman said "Bulga Coal has accepted a $15,000 fine imposed by the NSW Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) over a plume created by a blast at our Bulga open cut mining operation on August 22.”
“The incident was deeply disappointing and an unexpected and abnormal outcome for our Bulga operations.
“After reporting the plume to relevant authorities, including the EPA, we issued a formal apology to residents of Broke village on the day of the incident. We also made personal contact with residents and Broke Public School the following day to address any concerns.
We have undertaken a thorough investigation into the planning and execution of the blast and written to all residents informing them of the results of this investigation and changes that have been made to eliminate, or minimise, the potential for future blast fume generation and impact on the community."
