And, that’s largely due to appointment of Jye Bayley as the first grade captain-coach.
The 26-year-old, who is held in great esteem by his peers, steps into the role left vacant by the departure of Noel Dent, due to work commitments.
Bayley, a former Country representative at junior level, previously plied his trade in the Newcastle-based competition.
For the past two seasons, he’s run out for the Greyhounds.
“I’m here to win a premiership,” Bayley said.
“There are no prizes for second best.
“I think we’ll have a really strong squad heading into the first round.
“We’ve got a number of key players returning, which should make a difference.
“With a lot of hard work, I don’t believe many teams will match us.
“But, it starts here on the training paddock.”
To assist in that area, the Greyhounds have turned to the experienced Barry Heuston.
“He’s made himself available every day of the week,” Bayley said.
“It’s a great coup for the club.
“We’re pleased by the numbers we’re currently getting at training.
“I’m keen to bring discipline [and hard work] to the Greyhounds, too.
“It’s been a bit of an issue in the past.
“And, shift-work is no excuse.
“We need to think outside the square if we’re to succeed on the field.”
Bayley, who’ll be assisted by Ben Thorley, said he’s eager to create a positive attitude and social environment in 2017 as the Greyhounds celebrate their 70th anniversary.
“It’s important to have camaraderie in the club,” he said.
“And, I feel it’s coming back.”
Training continues at Cook Park in the short term on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6pm, so anyone considering playing this year in any grade is urged to attend these skill-based sessions.
The club’s first trial game has been locked in for March 18 against the Taree Bulls at Pirtek Park.
