Experienced rugby league player, and the driving force behind Singleton’s first women’s team, Phoebe Desmond, says she has been blown away with the team’s defensive efforts. “We have only had one try scored against us, and have won all our games,” she says. Although the hard task master made it clear from the beginning there was no point going into a tackle half-heartedly.  And, she should know. The committed forward played for the Hunter Stars in the 2016 Sydney Metropolitan Competition, and prior to this with the Maitland Pickers. She also played juniors “with the boys” until she was required to stop. Desmond has also been asked to play with the Newcastle Knights women’s side after the inaugural Hunter Valley Group 21 9’s Pre-Season Competition comes to an end. However, after organising everything from securing a major sponsor, Singleton Pump&Water, to recruiting players, Desmond is determined to see a full competition established next season. She also hopes to see a big crowd at Pirtek Park on Friday night for their only home game.
