The fatal accident that occurs yesterday morning is under investigation.
A Hyundai Lantra heading west and an eastbound Holden Commodore collided on Mitchell Line of Road, Whittingham.
As a result of the crash, the 63-year-old male driver of the Commodore died at the scene. A 53-year-old woman in the front passenger seat of the Commodore received spinal injuries and a 16-year-old girl in the rear suffered abrasions.
They were both taken to John Hunter Hospital in stable condition.
The driver of the Lantra, a 32-year-old man, suffered leg injuries and was also taken to John Hunter Hospital in a stable condition.
Police from Newcastle Crash Investigation Unit attended the scene and conducted inquiries.
The road was closed for six hours during the examination of the scene. A report will be prepared for the Coroner.
2.22pm: Police are investigating the fatal car crash at Mitchell Line Road this morning.
Officers have been told that two sedans collided east of the intersection of Mitchell Line Road and Range Road.
The driver of one of the vehicles, a 63-year-old man, died at the scene.
Two other people have been treated by NSW Ambulance Paramedics and are now being flown to John Hunter Hospital.
The patients were trapped in the vehicle for a period of time.
A 32-year-old male has suffered leg injuries and a 53-year-old female has suspected spinal and associated injuries.
Officers attached to Hunter Valley Local Area Command have established a crime scene and commenced an investigation. A report will be prepared for the Coroner.
Mitchell Line Road is closed in both directions with traffic diversion in place. Drivers are warned to be cautious around this area.
10.02am: The Westpac Rescue Helicopter is on scene at Mitchell line road and the Golden highway after two vehicles collided head on earlier this morning.
At present there are two persons still trapped, with emergency services working to treat and release them.
It’s reported that a third person is a fatality in the accident.
9.07am: According to Live Traffic two cars have been involved in a collision on Mitchell Line Road near Range Road.
Emergency services are in attendance and the Westpac helicopter is on its way to the scene.
According to police, a male is currently trapped in one of the vehicles.
Motorists are urged to exercise caution. The incident started at 7:56am.
Diversions are in place as Mitchell Line Road (Golden Highway) has been closed between Range Road and the New England Highway.
