The challenge involves an arduous 10 day trek across the original Kokoda Trail in Papua New Guinea, presentations at significant battle sites and discussions on sacrifice, courage, mateship, endurance and leadership.
It provides participants with a practical leadership experience based on the achievements, and sacrifice of, our diggers during the campaign.
However, to mark their 70th anniversary the successful community club is giving one local resident the chance to embark on this life-changing journey.
Singleton Diggers general-manager, Gerard McMillan, says it is also the 75th anniversary the “significant” military campaign.
And, he is encouraging physically fit local residents aged between 18-30 to apply.
“All the details are on our website under community and the applications need to be submitted by Anzac day,” he explains.
For more information contact Mr McMillan on 6572 2622 or send him an email gerard.mcmillan@singletondiggers.com.au
Meanwhile, applications are now open for the club’s successful Community Chest program.
Every year various community groups, sporting clubs, and other non-profit organisations, get the opportunity to secure vital cash, or in-kind, donations.
However, in 2017 due to new government regulations those seeking support will have to provide a few extra details.
Mr McMillan says this will involve providing a detailed project plan and revealing the financial position of your organisation. He welcomes the changes as it will make the process more “transparent”.
Singleton Diggers have been giving back to the community since 1982 as a part of the Club Grants scheme, and they are proud of this legacy.
Back then Mr McMillan would source silverware for the recipients, who in turn, would “raffle” them off.
But times have changed, and last year the club distributed a total of $120 000 worth of both cash and in-kind donations to various community groups.
