“When you go past Nobbys, and you hear that seven-gun salute, it’s like ‘welcome home’,” said the Newcastle’s commanding officer, Commander Mark Sirois. 

The Royal Australian Navy frigate voyaged from Sydney to Newcastle on Saturday, on what was called a families’ cruise. The ship’s company of 189 was almost doubled in number, as loved ones joined the Newcastle for a day. 

Yet this was not only about the journey at sea; the Newcastle’s company is also being kept busy in her destination. On Monday from 10am, the ship’s officers and crew will march in a Freedom of Entry parade in the city, and on Tuesday, they will take part in Anzac Day services.

Sub-Lieutenant Eren Ulusoy, who was born in Turkey, said he was looking forward to participating in the services in the city where he lived as a small child. “It’s an honour and privilege to march,” he said. “And to do that in Newcastle, my first home, is incredible.”

Chief Petty Officer Kurt Withers, originally from Lemon Tree Passage, had on board his father-in-law, Noel Skinner, who saw from the ship his home suburb, Stockton. CPO Withers said he had been in the navy for 17 years.

“This is my first Anzac Day march in Newcastle since I joined,” he said. “The best part is the family will be able to see it.” 

CPO Withers had another family event while the Newcastle was in port. His baby daughter, Lara, was to be christened on board on Sunday.

Newcastle RSL sub-branch president Ken Fayle said the involvement of the Newcastle’s company in Anzac Day services helped connect the past with the present.

“It adds immensely to the day, because we’re commemorating not only the old guys but honouring all those young sailors,” he said. “These are the modern faces of the defence force.” 

A number of those on board said this could one of the last visits by the Newcastle to her namesake city, as the ship is due to be decommissioned in mid-2019.
