The former Singleton store was the community’s one-stop shop for everything you could possibly need, from furniture and apparel to fresh produce.
The store first opened its doors on March 18, 1909 and was one of the first major stores to open in Singleton. In a time before the town had Woolworths or Coles, the Co-Op was a place to not only shop but to see friends and mingle too.
During its 84 year operation period, the store underwent a series of redevelopments before closing its doors for the final time in 1993.
Rae Davies, Maureen Joliffe, Olwyn Bower and Diana Adam were all employees at the Co-Op and say it was a brilliant place to work.
“We all absolutely loved working there,” Rae says.
“It was like a big family at the Co-Op and we all learnt so much from working there,” Diana added.
The group of ladies began organising to host a reunion two months ago and so far have created a list of 260 names of past employees.
The reunion is set to be held on Sunday, October 1 at the Singleton Diggers on York Street. The event will begin at 11.30am and provide a buffet lunch.
All past employees and their partners are welcome to attend the event however it is essential that they contact Rae on 0431377211, Diana on 0422236851 or Maureen on 65776110 to RSVP attendance and receive further information about the reunion.
The reunion will be a wonderful opportunity to catch up with past employees, share stories and enjoy a lunch.
