A purebred Angus steers wins grand champion award on the hook at the 30th annual Wingham Beef Week

In a great result for long term organisers and supporters of the Wingham Beef Week a purebred Bonny Brooke bred Angus steer has triumphed on the hook to win grand champion carcase.

Bonny Brooke Angus stud is owned by Bruce and Helen Scrivener, former Wingham district cattle producers, who now operate the stud at their property at Yarrowitch near Walcha.

The Scrivener family were part of the original Wingham Beef Week organising committee and it was fitting that they should have bred the grand champion carcase at the event’s 30 anniversary.

Those involved in the event’s early days would well remember Bruce and Helen’s dedication to see the Beef Week succeed and flourish especially the junior competitions.

The winning steer scored 91.962 points and was known as Bobby, he  was aged  9.5 months from a Bonny Brooke cow by a Bonny Brooke sire and was exhibited by A. & N. Gardiman and D. & D. McKinnon from Wingham.

He did not rate a mention in the live judging by Travis Worth, Denman in the led section but went onto defeat 148 entries on the hook in both the led and unled classes.

Unled champion carcase was a Murray Grey entered by Wallowing Murray Grey, Gunnedah who have now exhibited the champion unled carcase at Beef Week for three years in a row.

Wingham Beef Exporters, held in conjunction with beef week, a MSA index pen of five competition which attracted a strong field of cattle from throughout the NSW.

Once again the Scrivener family were very successful this time their son Alan and his wife Megan, “Marathon” Yarrowitch exhibited the single highest scoring MAS index carcase with a score of 67pts – which is an exceptional score well above the national average.

This particular carcase was sired by a Charolais from a purebred Bonny Brooke dam.

His parents also exhibited some outstanding MSA index carcases with their purebred Angus steers.
