And, if results from the weekend are anything to go by then the competition is a lot tighter than the points ladder suggests. Just a converted try separated the Ourcare Singleton First Grade side and Aberdeen during Saturdays match at McKinnon Field.
While in the other two matches just four points or less stood between the teams at games end.
The Tigers withstood a second half comeback by Singleton to win 22 – 16. Again injuries continue to plague the side with several front line players still out of action and in some cases this has been the difference between winning and losing and why the Dog’s find themselves 1 and 4 for the season.
This weekend sees the Scone Thoroughbreds come to Pirtek Park and the visitors have tasted defeat just once this season and that was last week to the undefeated Muswellbrook Rams. Singleton and Scone met in Round1 where the home side emerged 25 – 24 victors. Singleton will field a vastly different side than in that game several weeks ago and have a good record against scone at home. Hopefully a big home crowd can get behind the boys and give them the lift they will need to topple the reigning premiers.
The Remondis Group Reserve Grade side came away with a solid win over the previously undefeated Aberdeen Tigers last weekend securing a 24 – 10 win. They achieved this with a skinny bench so the effort, particularly the defensive effort deserves praise. They now share the lead in this eight team competition after five rounds with a 4 – 1 win/loss record. This competition is also a lot closer on inspection with their foes this week Scone toppling the Merriwa Magpies who managed to defeat Singleton at home just a fortnight ago. Singleton defeated Scone 40 – 22 in Round 1 but it was a struggle for three quarters of the contest before the Dog’s accelerated away. The second of four great contests this weekend.
The Singleton Tyre Centre Under 18’s emerged with a share of the spoils on Sunday in their match against Denman at Greta Sportsground. It was an abysmal first half filled with errors that continue to hurt the team. That coupled with a lopsided penalty count heavily in Denman’s favour allowed the opposition to establish a 10 – nil lead with a try on half time proving crucial. Despite trailing, the defensive effort was quite sound considering the amount of possession the Devils had.
The second half was a better period with Singleton finishing hard scoring three tries to get the margin back to 16 – 14. A penalty in front of the sticks with three minutes to go gave Singleton a chance to steal the game however an injury allowed the clock to wind down so a penalty goal became the preferred option to tie the game at 16 – 16. The side has 2 wins, 2 draws and a loss and they need to arrest their error rate to demonstrate the full potential of the team.
The Entire Concrete Ladies League-tag side let slip a share of the competition lead with an error riddled performance going down to Aberdeen 8 – 4 in a low scoring affair. Ball security was the main issue with the team making mistakes and failing to build any pressure on their opposition. Singleton take on Scone this Sunday and will be hoping to repeat their 32 – 6 Round 1 result. Consistency is the key for this team and like a few of their male counterparts, there is a big difference between their best and worst games this season and something all sides can work on.
So this Sunday it will be Singleton and arch rivals Scone going head to head in four games at Pirtek Park. With three away games to follow it’s important to try and secure some wins at home in all grades before hitting the road.
Hope to see you at the game, go you Red Dogs!
