And, show their hand they did on Sunday against the reigning premiers Scone Thoroughbreds at Pirtek Park.
Playing in front of a vocal home crowd the dog’s First Grade side produced their best performance of the season thumping the Thoroughbreds 50 – 18.
And, the Gardner’s Transport Players Player accolades went to first grade’s Zac Solman who terrorised the Scone left edge all day, Reserve Grade’s Nick Howard, U18’s prop Cody Argent and Maddi Sonter in the ladies league tag match.
Ward says Scone weren’t that bad it’s just that Singleton were very, very good and waxing lyrical about the display is meritorious.
A performance like this had been coming for some time but with a horrendous injury toll in the opening five rounds the Ourcare Singleton First’s had struggled to put in a full 80 minute performance together with their best team on the paddock.
The team was still minus key forwards Russell Richards, Craig Edwards and Hayden Yates but it need not matter as Singleton produced a solid first half display to lead 22 – 6 at the break.
Five-eighth Chad Solman had the opposition at sixes and seven’s in a masterful display. Skipper Jye Bayley powered over for the first try of the game before Prop Chris Martin crashed over for a try with his first touch of the game at the 18th minute mark prior to Zac Solman charging onto a ball for the Dog’s to set-up a commanding lead 18 – nil.
Scone realised the urgency of the situation and capitalised on two key penalties whilst in Singleton had possession to post a second converted try and reduce the margin to 22 – 12.
Adam Hamilton then latched onto a loose ball and careered away for a 50m try finished off with a backflip Nathan Blacklock would have been proud of. Scone returned serve with a converted try from a repeat set with the game in the balance at 28 – 18.
From that moment on however the home side created some serious momentum and cranked their attacking mojo up a gear, pouring on four unanswered converted tries in the final twenty minutes.
The last of which came via centre Nathan Sweeney to bring up a 50 point score-line that had pundits scrambling for the record books as to when the mighty Thoroughbreds had conceded so many points in a First Grade game went to Zac Solman.
The essence of such a dominant win will be judged on what they can produce in the next few weeks with away trips to Denman and Muswellbrook in the next fortnight given the team still finds itself in fifth position on the ladder.
The Remondis Group Reserve grade side produced arguably their best performance of the season when they scored a resounding 22 – nil win over Scone. The match was reduced in time following an injury in the Under 18’s game and the only points of the first half came on the stroke of half time when Lachlan Picton finished off a neat play for a 4 – nil lead.
Defence was the key to this game and the dogs were able to hold off all Scone had to offer and race in three tries of their own through Brodie Rinkin, Kyle Bailey and Ethan Coe who showed the benefit of time in the top grade with a solid game at pivot.
The Singleton Tyre Centre Under 18’s took some more steps in the right direction with a really dominant performance against Scone. A reduced error rate saw Singleton play the majority of the first half in enemy territory.
First half tries to Lachlan Fry, Cody Argent and Zac Butler gave Singleton an 18 – nil lead at the break. In promising signs the team charged into their next bit of work with enthusiasm with tries to Morgan Amidy and Hayden Burke who was enormous going from fullback to the back-row on top of landing four from four with the boot.
At 30-nil with twenty minutes remaining, the team worked through some positional changes and defended stoutly. An injury saw the final eight minutes waste away and our thoughts go out to the young injured Scone player for an early recovery.
The Entire Concrete ladies league-tag side put the disappointment of last week behind them to come out of the gates firing on all cylinders against Scone. Singleton raced in four unanswered tries to lead 22 – nil in better than even time to stun the visitors. A lapse in concentration though gave Scone some opportunities that they converted into two tries of their own to make it 22 – 12 at the break. Singleton managed to cross the stripe twice more on their way to a 32 – 18 win however there is no doubt the opposition has improved since the 26 point win in Round 1.
