TALENTED PAIR: Jayden Duff and Maui Carroll are off to the NSW All Schools Rugby Union Championships.

It doesn’t appear to matter what sport Maui Carroll and Jayden Duff choose to play, the pair have a history of being selected in representative teams. Since their primary school days they have easily transitioned between our popular footy codes, at times combining them, and always excelling. And, their latest achievement is being included in the New South Wales (NSW) Combined High School (CHS) U16’s Rugby Union team. Half-back Duff and Centre Carroll will now head to the NSW All Schools Championships from June 24 to June 25. To get this point the pair have taken part in a series of individual trials which culminated in a training session in Sydney last Friday and games on Sunday. Their selection was announced on Monday and to their credit the process involved a squad of 42 players being reduced to the current 23-man side. This comes on the back of Duff’s inclusion in the U16’s NSW Junior Rugby Union Country team. He has earned a Cockatoos jersey after a playing with the Hunter Wildfires at the recent Country Champs in Crescent Heads. Duff is currently playing club rugby with the Singleton Bulls U16’s side but this time last year he was actually having a crack at AFL.  During this period he was chosen to play for the U15’s Hunter side at the Northern Challenge Carnival and his club team – the Muswellbrook Cats - won a premiership. Then, at the end of the AFL season, he was invited to play with the Sydney Cavaliers at the NSW Waratahs U15 State Sevens Championships. They ended up winning the competition. At present Carroll is playing rugby league for the Singleton Greyhounds and earlier this season he was part of a Newcastle Knights Development Squad. Over the years he has skillfully played both league and union, impressing in both codes. Some highlights include being selected in the NSWPSSA Open Rugby Union side in 2013 to his inclusion in the 2016 Manly Sea Eagles U15’s Development Squad. Interestingly, in 2015 Caroll and Duff played together in a Group 21 Hunter Valley rugby league representative side –  and so their journey continues. The pair admit to being “nervous” about their possible selection in the state side as they both aspire to play at a much higher level in the future.
