Mach Energy are developing the Mount Pleasant open cut coalmine near Muswellbrook – a fully approved but greenfield site they purchased from Rio Tinto in January 2016.
Visiting Singleton last week Mach Energy’s managing director Scott Winter said they expected the first coal to be mined in October-November this year with work on the mine’s development progressing well.
Currently 160 people are on-site with that number to increase to 350 in the next two to three months, he said.
“We aim to champion change and diversity in the mining industry,” he said.
“To this end we have looked to employ indigenous staff and women in non-traditional roles at Mount Pleasant.”
Part of their community engagement includes sponsoring the Spectacular which will be held in Muswellbrook in 2018. The company’s Aboriginal Community Development Fund is arranging the event as a way to give back to the local community.
With free entry the Spectacular will be run from 2:00-9:00pm and organisers are hoping to get 1000 people come along and enjoy a variety of entertainment that will include Aboriginal arts, craft, cooking with bush tucker, music and fireworks
A highlight of the day will be a performance by Radical Son who crosses genres from soul to hip-hop and beyond. His often-poignant lyrics chart a course from hopelessness to healing; mercilessly deconstructing what is, and forever imagining what could be. Radical Son's music and stories are always guided by his Indigenous heritage from the Kamilaroi nation of Australia and the south pacific nation of Tonga.
As a vocalist, Radical Son has a unique ability to deliver as a soul singer, rapper and spoken word artist. This natural dexterity defines his earned place and presence in the contemporary musical landscape. The back-bone of radical son's stories continuously urge our human spirit to approach life through love and compassion.
The Voice competitor Loren Ryan will also be performing at the Spectacular.
In the evening Len Waters will give a keynote address. Len is skilled at communicating his deep sense of connection to Country and culture to all age groups. Listening more, seeing more, feeling more and appreciating more of their own environment. Len’s presentations bring ancient values and wisdom into the present day.
Organisers are also looking for anyone who wishes to have a market stall at the Spectacular. There will be no charge and they are keen to hear from interested parties.
