And, the community has the chance to do just that at Civic Green - the grassed area between the library and the Civic Centre - from 10am to 1pm. 

Uncle Perry Fuller will lead the entertainment with his richly cultural music performance and Singleton High School will present an informative dance presentation. 

There will be opportunities for the community to learn and take part in basket weaving and painting of boomerangs, and the Lions Club of Singleton will serve up a free barbecue lunch. 

Market and information stalls, including the opportunity for a free health check by Hunter New England Health, will also be on hand. 

Mayor Sue Moore said greater understanding of these cultures was key for the community to grow together and appreciate the influences that have shaped Singleton. 

“Singleton is fortunate to have a culturally rich and diverse community, and the NAIDOC Week event is an opportunity for everyone to come together to celebrate this important occasion,” she said. 

The 2017 theme – Our Languages Matter, aims to emphasise and celebrate the unique and essential role that indigenous languages play in cultural identity, linking people to the land and water and in the transmission of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history, spirituality and rites, through story and song.

“People can also visit the art exhibition at Singleton Library featuring Aboriginal artworks by local students, which will be on display during NAIDOC Week,” Cr Moore said.
