Controversial feed mill off the agenda until August

After Councillors were unable to conduct a site inspection, a controversial proposal to construct a feed mill at East Belford was withdrawn from Monday night’s agenda. If approved the development application (DA24/2017) would see a large shed, feed mills and silos built on a 10 hectare property at the corner of the New England Highway and Pothana Lane (near the former Belford rest area). The proposed mill will have the capacity to produce 20 000 tonnes of feed annually; generate up to four vehicle movements per day comprising of B-double or truck and dog; and would operate 24 hours a day 7 days a week. Nearby residents have voiced their opposition, arguing the development would be far better in an industrial area and not in their semi-rural community.

NO GO: Councillors were unable to conduct a planned inspection when they travelled to the site. A Council Staff report recommends the project be approved.
