Takara Truffle, with Michael Formosa driving, sat in the death seat outside favourite Miss Vera Mac in the group 3, 1609-metre race and produced a gritty run to win by 1.6 metres in 1.53.5.
“She dug deep," Goadsby said. “Mick said we kept creeping, and when she got close, she didn’t quit. In the run, I didn’t think she could win there, but she was pulling away on the line.”
It was a breakthrough win for Goadsby and Singleton owner-breeder Shearer.
“I rang the old fella up and he was happy,” he said. “He was in tears. That would be his first group win and that’s my first metro winner, so I was happy too.”
At Newcastle, Geoff and Matthew Harding had a winning double with Modern Beach and Rocknlachlan.
