Extra reinforcements from the Singleton School of Infantry were needed, a dedicated helper rewarded, and the boxes kept coming on Tuesday as the Lions prepared for this year’s Monster Book Sale. Each year the iconic event sees the historic pavilion at the showground transformed into a repository for books of all kinds – and it starts this Thursday.

Books will be on sale from 9am to 6pm on the opening day, and then from 9am till 5pm on Friday and Saturday. And, before it all gets underway Lions Club members took the opportunity to recognise the efforts of one half of the husband and wife team who co-ordinate the sale – Robbie Merrick.
Robbie and his wife, Jenny, took over from Annette Bartholomew four years ago and have been busy sorting books ever since. Fellow volunteer, Jenny Trunk, says the “pair do the lions share of the work” when it comes to the book sale.
But it wouldn’t all come together without the valuable assistance of the strapping young soldiers from the Lone Pine Barracks. This long-association ensures there is always plenty of muscle around to unpack and pack up the thousands of books that are generously donated. Corporal Rous says soldiers undergoing their initial employment training are “always more than happy to help out”.
The Lions Club took over running the event in 2005 after the mammoth task became to much for Lifeline. Money raised is consistently donated to both Singleton Family Support to fund the season for growth program and the Singleton Cancer Appeal.
