The facility built next door to SNC’s existing office in Mary Street will provide those in need with access to showers, a laundry and breakfast.
In addition to accessing those daily living basics people visiting the centre will also be assisted in connecting with other vital services that can provide them with help.
SNC, secretary, Sue George said everyone involved in the project was excited that its was finally coming to fruition.
“The development application was first submitted to Singleton Council in 2012 so we have been working on the shed and its interior for a few years now,” she said.
“SNC wants to thank everyone involved including mining companies Glencore, and Ashton Coal, Singleton Men’s Shed, Singleton Rotary, state and federal governments through their various funding programs and the fabulous local tradesmen who have worked on the project.”
“We have always tried whether possible to employ local tradesmen.”
But to make the facility fully operational they need volunteers who can spare a few hours. The facility will be open from 8:30am-11:30am each day.
“The volunteers can come weekly, monthly or whenever it suits but we need a minimum of two volunteers each shift to assist the people using the facility,” Mrs George said.
“At all times there will be staff next door at the SNC who can help the volunteers if and when required.”
Training for all volunteers will be provided through the Accidental Counselling Course offered by Lifeline and this is being funded by Glencore.
A first aid course will also be provided with funding from Singleton Diggers.
The shed will also house a community space (10mx12m) which can be used for various functions.
