The strongest classes were again in the white faces, where cattle judge Lachlan James of Wallawong Murray Greys, near Gunnedah, was impressed with the high calibre of entrants.
There was strong support from annual showgoers and exhibitors who hailed from both the lower and upper Hunter including the likes of Denman, Millfield, Lochinvar and Branxton.
With exhibitors from across the region the junior classes saw stiff competition, though it was LaValla Modesta of Berdihold Limousin Stud, Lochinvar, who came out on top taking out the Junior Champion Interbreed Heifer.
Tractor Maverick of Tractor Charolais in Denman claimed the title of Junior Champion Interbreed bull – Jack Galvin Memorial Trophy.
Senior Champion Interbreed Bull went to GF Merger M11 of Glenliam Farm Murray Greys, near Dungog. The stud also went on to claim the Best pair of bulls in the Show.
Senior Champion Interbreed Cow/Heifer was awarded to Hunter Lakes Poll Hereford’s HL Shamrock of Millfield.
Hunter Lakes Poll Herefords also managed to score themselves the Best Group of Show, Best pair of females and the major award of Supreme Exhibit of Show.
Having achieved the Supreme Exhibit title, Hunter Lakes Shamrock, son of Merewah Shamrock, will be heading to this year’s Sydney Royal this March.
This isn’t the first time Hunter Lakes Poll Herefords have achieved success at the Maitland event. In 2015, the Wile family’s stud claimed the Supreme title with their 20-24 months class Hunter Lakes Tsunami, and since then have scored a plethora of ribbons and awards at the Maitland Show.
The Maitland Show stud beef cattle competition was this year made possible by sponsors Flynn Haulage & Earthmoving, Richardson Bros. Stock Transport, Bowe & Lidbury, Daracon Group. Agribusiness NAB, TC Waste Services, Hicks Hay & Grain and E S Throsby.
For exhibitors interested in competing in other upcoming Shows throughout the Hunter and Mid North Coast regions, the Newcastle Show will be held next weekend on Friday 2nd, Saturday 3rd and Sunday 4th March 2018.
Organisers are receiving some good numbers for the Friday Junior Cattle Judging, Trade Steer and Paraders Competitions ( entries from Sydney, Central Coast and Hunter Valley areas) and with entries still coming in for the Saturday Stud Beef they are looking forward to a great event.
The Gresford Show will be held from March 9-10, Wingham Show from March 9-11, Gloucester Show from March 16-17 and the Upper Hunter Show also to be held from March 16-17.
