A MAN has been charged with assaulting police during a joint operation targeting the transportation of dangerous goods in the Hunter.

On Wednesday, August 1, officers from Traffic & Highway Patrol Command and officers from the Environment Protection Authority (EPA) conducted Operation Green Lantern on the New England Highway at Rixs Creek.
About 9am, police stopped a truck carrying several large gas bottles, in order to conduct an inspection.
A man who was driving behind the truck stopped and confronted police before allegedly punching a senior constable in the face.
The 47-year-old was arrested and taken to Singleton Police Station where he was charged with assault police.
He is expected to appear at Singleton Local Court on Thursday, September 27.
During the operation, 11 of the 17 heavy vehicles were found to be non-compliant.
Common faults included:
- Accuracy of dangerous goods documentation being carried
- Dangerous goods not being correctly restrained, and;
- Non-compliance of safety equipment
Ten penalty notices were issued, up to the value of $24,000.
Further joint operations targeting the safe movement of dangerous goods are expected.
