St Catherine’s Catholic College student Tom Druery rewrote the history books on Tuesday when recording a hat-trick in his school’s convincing win over St Joseph’s High School, Aberdeen.

Hundreds of locals have already viewed the video of the Year 10 student on the St Catherine’s Catholic College’s Facebook page while the school’s sports co-ordinator Matt Edwards cannot recall the last time a student achieved the feat for the school’s team.
“We’ve never had a hat-trick in my ten years involved in this competition (NSWCCC Nicholas Downie Trophy Competition),” Edwards said.
After posting a total of 175 runs the local school side then chased their opponents (who finished on 80) thanks to the 16-year-old’s dominant strike rate.
“All three were bowled in the hat-trick and he finished with 4-11 and 34 runs,” Edwards added.
“We’ve entered the competition for the ten years that I’ve been here and we’ve probably been involved for a total of 20 (or so).”
“But we’ve never made it this far so to make it through to the top 16 in the state is a great achievement for our school.”
“The video (of the hat-trick) went out on our Facebook page and it was a big deal because we’re not too renowned for winning many cricket games.”
Jesse Bates finished just shy of a half century (45 runs) ahead of Druery and Beau Parnell (30).
“Dorian Thornbury also ended up taking four wickets for four runs which wasn’t bad considering he was called up for the side the night before,” Edwards continued.
“We’re also proud to have Taylor Knight (female student) involved in the side as well as Josephine Pierce who participates with the boys in our junior side.”
“She (Knight) certainly has some high credentials; she’s a regular down in the Sydney comp on the weekends.”
St Catherine’s will now play St Paul's College (Kempsey), who proved too classy for St Joseph's Regional College (Port Macquarie), next Friday, December 7.
Edwards admits he is already proud of what his group has been able to achieve.
“We had our first round against Lochinvar and we chased down their total of 107 and then we played Aberdeen and made 175 runs so this is already the furthest we’ve gone,” he added.
“But at the same time we’re just a team that likes to go out there and have a bit of fun.”
“There are plenty of laughs out of the field and we have three or four non cricketers who are learning but also enjoying it as we keep playing.”
“It will be a long bus trip to Taree, the bus will leave at 5.45am and hopefully we’ll get the victory but if not it’s still a fantastic effort to make it this far.”
