A quick start from our boys out wide saw Xavier (Honey Badger) Edwards, Sam (Folau) Harris and Daniel (Mogg) Malloy link up for our first points, the self-belief showing in our boys is inspirational.
Merewether hit back and dominated, with the young Bulls unable to combine on whole to halt the onslaught. Our fly halves remained solid throughout, with Liam Bowden & Justin Robins dishing it out in the rucks and Josh Carson trying to give the team room with his boot, but it look as though this game was all but over with still 20 min of play to go.
An act of ill-discipline, reduced the team to 14 players and trailing on the scoreboard by two tries many a team would have given up, for those present at the game witnessed the greatest comeback ever. The players strengthened their resolve, muscled up, teamed up and worked as one mass of unstoppable power. It was a sight to behold with the green jerseys of Merewether flying about like grass clippings from a Red and Black mower without a catcher. Jayson Hovi was inspirational and was justly rewarded with the Singleton Windscreens and Glass, Majestic Cinemas Player of the Match.
Richard Impey, Corey Egan and Damon Richards all ran the ball hard and backed it up with strong defense, while, the ladies’ man, Brent Williams continues to find form with his big hit ups. Angus Papworth, you are the champ and Wilkesy your line-outs are gold.
In 20 minutes, the team clawed back and snatched victory from defeat, and showed not only their opponents and supporters what they could do, but more importantly showed each other what they could do as a team. An awesome display right at the end so imagine the result if they played the full game that way, this team has yet to realize and release its full potent potential.
Tries to Jayson Hovi, Bryce Fields and Daniel Malloy (two) with Josh Carson kicking two goals.
Evolution Resource Group Under 16s
Singleton 10 – Nelson Bay 7
A 9.50 kick off at Nelson Bay saw an early morning road trip for the ERG U16s, with excited eyes the parents gathered for the game they love to watch the Bulls battle the Groppers. After a basic error at the kick off the boys grinding rhythm of solid defence and sniping runs put the pressure on the Bay boys, when their line broke via a scything angled run by Askil Mathias that got the Bulls on the scoreboard. Nelson Bay attacked strongly but solid defence across the park led by Kadin Howard and Carel “Freight Train” Impey kept the Gropper’s in check.
The second stanza mirrored the first with Singleton camped in the Bay’s territory most of the game but a lack of composure at critical times did them no favours. “Baby faced Assassin” Cooper Stafford never gave up and his determination paved the way for a sniping try to older brother Max that saw the Bulls hit the front 10-7 and hold the lead for a tough fought victory.
LJ Hooker Real Estate Under 14s
Singleton 12 – Wanders 31
Wanderers showed they will be a force to be reckoned with in season 2014 taking the win over a patchy LJHooker Real Estate U14s Bulls side.
Friday night football got off to a great start with controlled, measured play by the Bulls early taking a 5-0 lead through good forward work. However undisciplined play, and a string of penalties and handovers enabled Wanderers to constantly dictate field possession and go to the break with 17-5 lead.
The second half continued in similar fashion with Wanderers taking the initiative, before structured Bulls play returned and the team crossed for its second try.
Sam Hope made some great tackles and Beau Merrick, Nathaniel Edwards and both Fin and Bryn Morgan-Mythen took ground with the ball, Alex Vaughan and Noah Alder were welcomed back for the first time this season from injury, and both made impact.
Point scorers for Singleton where Dylan Oelofse and Jack Godschalk.
Singleton Electec, Majestic Cinemas Players Player’s – Alex Vaughan and Jett Derrick
Singleton Tyre & Battery Under 13s
Singleton 25 – Nelson Bay 22
The Singleton Tyre & Battery U13s took to the field at Rugby Park on Saturday to confront the boys that eliminated them from the U12 final series in 2013 - Nelson Bay. The boys ran South in the cool overcast conditions and some early focused defence saw them five nil up afterfive5 minutes. As expected the Bay boys came storming back with two quick tries and it took our boys' a sustained effort to see them all square at 10 all heading for the oranges.
Despite the oranges not arriving our boys started strongly again with first points and after a back and forth scoring half they prevailed 25-22! Tries to Isacc Barry, Maui Carroll and and Abraham Papworth; excellent defense from Ewan Sands, Tristan Pitcher, Feenix Marley and Hunter Damstra, well supported by fierce ball-carrying forwards Ethan Smith, Jack Phoenix, Tyler Stafford and Jacob Cox.
A well-deserved rest next week before the first match of winter on June 14.
Safety Plus Training, Majestic Cinemas Player of the Match was Maui Carroll.
CDG Law Under 12s
Singleton 71 – Hamilton 0
With the CDG Law U12s coming off a loss from the week before, they knew what they had to do.
A penalty from the kick off saw the forwards lay the foundations for the backs to go straight on the attack with precision passing and support play to put first points on the scoreboard. From the re-start, the ball fell in Singleton’s favour and the bulls crossed again. Sam Harrison and Mackenzie Brown teamed up in the back row and through constant pressure at the breakdown and great ball handling skills set-up another try to the Red and Blacks.
Great yards up the field from our forward “show no mercy” Logan Millard, made the next try a little easier, and when the backs got a chance to show with ball in hand they didn’t disapoint putting players into open space to scarper up field to score. Defensively Lachlan Caslick was rock solid stopping opposition raids before they even started.
In the second half the Bulls were this time on the defensive when “ferret” Ben Couling popped out of a ruck with the ball, linked up with Mackenzie Brown who lit the fuse to send the backs the length of the field to score the final points for the match.
Point scorers for the Bulls were Thomas Stacy, Tim Ryan, Mick Taylor, Jeremy Dunn and Mitchell Cox.
Eureka Canvas & Embroidery Man of the Match went to Riley Woods who worked like a Trojan all game with his tackling and sprints up the field all game.
McDonald’s and Majestic Cinemas Encouragement award went to Timmy Ryan.
Saunders Honda Under 11s
Singleton 15 – Maitland Black 17
The Saunders Honda 11s played Maitland Black on the weekend at Rugby Park in what everyone knew was going to be a tough encounter against a well drilled rugby team. The young bulls turned up on the day keen and enthusiastic; wanting to put the last encounter to bed after being defeated earlier in the season.
They showed great belief in themselves from the whistle with the first try to Ethan McLoughlin after five minutes of play. Defence from both teams was determined and was a see saw affair until a crack opened up and allowed Oliver Armstrong to slip through for his first try of the season. Some good scrambling around the rucks by both sides provided some entertaining and tense moments where either team could have taken the ascendency. By half time the bulls had a two try to one lead.
The second half proved to be a good test when midway through the second half Ethan McLoughlin scored for a second time followed soon after by Maitland scoring and converted to trail Singleton by three points. Tension built as the boys defended against the constant Maitland attack as best they could. It wasn’t enough though when the blacks scored right on full time to steal the game.
The Kennards Hire, Majestic Cinemas player of the match goes to a well deserving Oliver Armstrong, who’s lightening runs and great try saving defence almost won the game.
Triple Transport Under 9s
Singleton 35 – Maitland 40
The Triple H Transport U9s had another home game against a very competitive Maitland side on the lush grounds of Rugby Park. These boys are very exciting to watch at their young age and are proving week after week how competitive they can be.
Miller Damstra led the team as Captain, and the Bulls had to defend straight up with brilliant tackling by Shelby Rata-Waipouri, Bill Edwards and Adam Morris. The team showed how good their passing skills are, sharing the ball and finding holes in the opposition defence which were exploited by Miller Damstra and Ryan Turner.
In the second half great running with the ball by Jaxon Cole and Sam Stokes, Oliver Gunn’s ball stealing, and the quick hands of Nathan Duff kept the ball away from the opposition and enble the Bulls to cross the line. Maitland launched an all-out, but a Adam Morris cover tackle knocked the ball lose for Abbott Stacy and Toby Dippel to combine and cross the line a final time.
Point scorers for the Bulls were Kaleb Ward, Shelby Rata-Waipouri, Bill Edwards, Abbott Stacy Oliver Gunn and Toby Dippel.
Peter Dunn Real Estate, Majestic Cinemas Player of the match went to Adam Morris.
Sadly we are losing 2 great players who are moving away and wish the Turner family and Dippel family farewell and good luck in their new home towns, thanks for being a part of our team and club and we hope to see you back one day in the Red and Black.
Singleton Earth Moving Under 8s
Singleton 35 – Maitland White 55
The Singleton Earth Moving U8s played a tough away match against a much improved Maitland White. Lachie Foster was the Majestic Cinemas player of the match with an outstanding game in attack and defence. Kye Hetherington, Jackson Maskey, Charlie Whalan, Thomas Cox, Nathan Vaughan, Charlie Merrick and Hamish O’Brien all had solid games and assisted try scorers in what was a great team effort by the Bulls. Tries were scored by Jack Binnie and Hugh Partridge. A special congratulations goes to Lachlan Muddiman for scoring his first try in only his second game. Well done!
The boys are really looking forward to taking on Pokolbin on the June 14 at Alan Bull Oval.
