Unfortunately the top qualifying rider suffered a crash in one of the finals, which put him out of the running for the standard wheel competition.
Though, he managed to race his way back to the top in the last final, crossing the line in second place with his family, friends and team cheering him on.
Claiming a spot on the podium at the Australian Junior Dirt Track Championship is a big accomplishment, particularly as riders travel from all across the nation to contest the titles.
Though this isn’t the first time Smith has claimed a top spot at the national champs, having similarly finished in second place in 2016. Next year Smith will jump from the junior competition to the under 16s where he will be required race on a bigger bike.
Fortunately the local lad has the ability to keep his cool both on and off the track, and isn’t fazed by the prospect of racing against riders three years his senior.
The modest young man will also have plenty of assistance heading into the 2018 racing season thanks to his sponsors Port Tune Performance, Chris Watson Motorcycles, Pro-Moto Suspension and Downside Customs.
Two other Singleton riders also braved the 38 degree heat at the championships – Billy Van Eerde and Alex Kenworthy Jones.
With Van Eerde returning to the dirt bike scene after his international success at the KTM RC Cup in Malaysia in August. He picked up third place in both the 13 – U16 100-150 2str and 200-250 4str events.
While Kenworthy Jones rode well enough in the heats of the 10-U14 85cc modified 4str to qualify for the final.
The final was a wild and woolly affair after a mini cyclone cleared the pit area of all shelters, with the youngster finishing in 7th place.
