With all grades playing in the regular competition on Saturday and the senior rep season starting on Sunday, it was a big weekend of cricket in Singleton. There was plenty of action in first grade when Valley (208) destroyed JPC (97) at Howe Park. And, the man who did all the damage was Daniel Storey. Batting down the order he piled on 62 runs and not far behind him was Jacob Carey (42). Then when JPC set about chasing Valley’s imposing total, Storey backed up his batting performance with an impressive contribution to the bowling attack. He ended up taking six wickets (6/32), the next best with the ball was Liam Storey (3/18). SDCA’s Helene Goadsy, who scored the game, says the brothers bowled well together and kept it very tight. Although it was probably a day JPC would rather forget, best with bat was Darren Thomson (29) and Nic Stokes (26). While Stephen Reeves bowled well 4/20 and Andrew Winsor 3/32. In the other match, Creeks (208) were also convincing winners over Muswellbrook (108) at Victoria Park.

Sunday saw Singleton take on Newcastle C&S in Round 1 of the annual John Bull Shield rep competition. The visitors took to the crease first and bowlers Darren Thomson (3/29) and Daniel Thrift were pivotal in restricting the visitors to 151. But the chase did not go to plan. Despite Singleton’s openers, Jake Mackaway (60) and Greg Thrift (32), forging a strong partnership and managing to score 52 runs before Thrift’s wicket fell in the 11th over, the home side still fell short by two runs. Unfortunately the second division match was a whitewash, Maitland (2/58) defeated Singleton (54).
