On Wednesday, December 6 students at Singleton Heights Public School revelled in the official unveiling of their brand new stairs.

The staircase leading up to the school library has been cleverly painted to resemble a stack of books. And, making the design all the more special is the fact that the school librarian, Jenna Barwick chose the top 20 most popular library books to be put into the design.

From Charlotte’s Web to Where the Wild Things Are, the staircase not only brightens up the school’s environment, but promotes the importance of reading.

The project, which took 6 months in the making and three weeks to complete, is a part of the school’s three year plan to improve the playground’s aesthetic, while also encouraging the Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) program’s values of respect, responsibility and excellence in learning.

The painting was completed by Arty Pants, a newly established painting business started by the talented duo, Carlie Weedon and Mandy Butler.

While the duo said it was a big job to complete, they couldn’t be happier with the finished product – and neither can the students.

“It makes our whole school look brighter,” said the newly elected group of school captains.

“My favourite ‘book’ on the staircase is the Gruffalo,” 2018 Vice-Captain Hanz Java said.

“It looks so cool.”

With the students pleased with the brightly coloured design, the school staff are eager to get the next few projects underway in the new year.
