The semillon has won six trophies and 17 gold medals across major national wine shows including the NSW Department of Primary Industries James Busby Perpetual Trophy for Best NSW Wine at the Sydney Royal Wine Show.
“Our first vintage in 1993 when the Stevens family’s semillon arrived myself and our winemaker Andrew Spinaze thought it was simply beautiful, it had a wonderful smell, something different and those grapes proved to be the genesis of our move into single vineyards wines,” Bruce Tyrrell said.
“We wanted to produce something special not blend that wine away and it has certainly worked for us not only with the Stevens semillon but the HVD semillon and Belford semillon.”
With his Pokolbin district vineyards looking a picture of health after the arrival of spring rain Mr Tyrrell is looking forward to the 2018 vintage.
Last year’s wines are looking pretty good and he is hopeful the 2017 Stevens semillon proves to be as successful as the 2011 drop although the 2011 wine was an exceptional example perhaps one of Tyrrell’s truly great wines.
Mr Tyrrell is also pleased about the direction the Australian dollar is heading.
He would love to see the dollar around $US0.60cents saying at that value Australian wines become truly internationally competitive.
Interest from Asia in particular China are regions where Mr Tyrrell expects to see export growth in the coming years.
