On Tuesday January 9, Daphne celebrated her special birthday with family and friends at Cooinda, all of whom couldn’t be happier to have such a wonderful woman present in their lives.
Humble and elegant, Daphne certainly doesn’t look her age, though is happy to share that she has reached such a milestone.
Formerly known as Daphne Puxty, she was born in Singleton in 1918. One of nine children, she spent her days riding horses to and from her school in Camberwell, before going on to work at Spotters Wood property and later at Dr Maffey’s surgery in town.
She married her loving husband, Mel Andrews at All Saints Church in 1941.
Together the couple owned and ran a general store which would later be known as ‘Tommy Tuckers’. While working at the store the pair lived in the premise upstairs, something that Daphne is fond of reminiscing.
A wonderful family woman, Daphne had two sons, Kevin and Brian, as well as three grandchildren, Louise, Greg and Mark.
Today, she also enjoys spending time with her nine great-grandchildren.
Despite being 100-years-old, Daphne still has an undeniable charm which often brings smiles to those around her.
Her family and friends speak incredibly fondly of her, saying she never complains, is a social butterfly and remains fiercely independent. In fact she only moved to Cooinda retirement home around three years ago, at the age of 97.
Undoubtedly excited to celebrate her 100th, Daphne said there is no secret to living a long life. Instead she offered words of advice – “Just live a life of happiness.”
Congratulations Daphne on reaching 100 years and living an incredibly full and happy life in Singleton.
