The northern hemisphere might revel in their white Christmases, but in Australia we’re all about the heat of summer holidays. So it’s perhaps an appropriate time of year for a national celebration of everything that’s great about being Australian - and, as 2018 gets more established and our regular routines return to normal, one last opportunity to rejoice in all the things that make Singleton a great place to live.

Our Australia Day Committee has been hard at work planning another community party for January 26 and all the festivities on the lawn outside the Civic Centre. Bring along a picnic and some shade and enjoy live music, let the kids loose on the water slides and get lost in the wonder of the biggest bubble machine you’ve ever seen. And of course, everything starts with a barbecue breakfast for the minuscule cost of a gold coin donation. Most importantly, 26 January is a special day for those people who will officially become Australian citizens and for us to celebrate the selfless work of our fellow residents of Singleton with the announcement of the Citizen of the Year and Young Achiever of the Year.
I can tell you the nominees this year are exceptional and I invite everyone to come along and help us acknowledge all of them at the formal proceedings in the Civic Centre from 9.30am. It’s also a nice way to reflect on our own contributions, and to consider what we want to achieve both as a community and as individuals in 2018. With the weeks already flying by, the experts might say many of our New Year’s resolutions have disappeared with the torn wrapping paper. So it’s fortunate that I don’t need to set a New Year’s resolution.
My goal for 2018 is pretty simple, but requires no less hard work: I want to keep the momentum going from last year to keep pressure on the State Government for our fair share of resources, and to continue to get the best outcomes for the people of Singleton with improved road infrastructure, public transport, education, health and policing services. And we already know 2018 is gearing up to be a successful year with lots happening on the ground across our local government area, not least the transformation of Riverside Park and completion of the Singleton Regional Livestock Market upgrade. I wish everyone a safe and happy 2018 and look forward to seeing you on Australia Day. For all the information you need about the event, head to http://www.singleton.nsw.gov.au/australiaday
