Through the program, parents, carers and guardians across NSW will be able to claim a $100 voucher to put towards the registration and participation costs of sport and active recreation activities for their kids.
With household budgets stretched, the NSW government wants to ensure every child has access to sports and active participation for their health and wellbeing.
The Australian Bureau of Statistics found in 2015-16 that 27.4 per cent of of children aged 5 to 17 were overweight or obese, with 74 per cent of children not getting enough physical exercise.
From 31 January 2018, parents, guardians and carers of children residing and participating in sport and other approved physical activities in NSW can apply for the voucher online through their MyServiceNSW account, and then redeem the voucher at their local sporting club or approved provider.
Whether your child participates in summer or winter sports or activities, Active Kids vouchers can be used until 31 December so there is no rush to claim.
Minister for Sport, Stuart Ayres, said the program was designed to benefit entire families.
"Every dollar counts in the household budget and this is $100 back into the pockets of mums and dads so more kids can play sport,” Mr Ayres said. “We’re helping to ensure families don’t have to stretch their budgets and to ensure their kids are active and healthy.”
