Bill and Phyllis Pendered are just like any other couple. They met each other at an exercise class and soon enough Bill gained the courage to ask Phyllis on a date.
A few cups of coffee and trips to the cinema later and the caring couple were dating. After two happy years, Bill got down on one knee and popped the question.
But what makes the story so special is the fact that they were both 85-years-old at the time.
“She couldn’t say yes quick enough,” Bill says with a chuckle.
“She is a country girl and that’s one of the reasons we get on so well.”
Both Bill and Phyllis had previous marriages spanning more than 50 years. Unfortunately both partners passed away.
Now living together at the age of 91, the pair says the secret to having a strong relationship is being honest and fair. But the key to making it last, according to Phyllis, is to start each day with a ‘good morning’ and a kiss, and to end each evening in a similar fashion.
Of course, the odd cup of tea doesn’t go astray either. And they’ll be enjoying a nice cuppa together today to celebrate Valentine’s Day - proof that you’re never too old to be lucky in love.
