The course will teach them the skills to perform, repair and overhaul a range of electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, electro-hydraulic and electro-pneumatic aircraft components.
Successfully completing the course could lead to an apprenticeship with BAE, Boeing and Jetstar.
And, although the inaugural offering has kicked off – there are still spots available.
SHS’s Luke Judge who has signed up for the course says the first two weeks have been more of a course overview but it will soon be more hands on.
“They are trucking in some pretty impressive gear soon. A huge plane fuselage and landing gear that we’ll get to work on at school,” he explains.
“I am really looking forward to working on hydraulic systems too. We’ll also go on excursions down to the Williamtown RAAF base and get to work on the Joint Strike Fighters at BAE, which will be awesome, as well as commercial airliners.”
The course runs every Monday 2.00pm - 6.00pm in the Metals Workshop T9.
SHS careers adviser, Annie Phillips, says interested students from other schools are encouraged to take up this “fantastic” opportunity.
“We work closely with the RDA (Regional Development Australia) and when I found out they were running this course at other schools in the area I was determined to get it here,” she explains.
“It is such a fantastic course; teaching our students 21st century skills that will led to jobs. They will be working with the latest technology.”
Aeroskills will provide qualified and skilled young people for Williamtown's growing aerospace industry in readiness for Defence projects, including the Joint Strike Fighter.
