But, since that time, attendance numbers have grown for The Putty Road Truck Drivers Memorial service at Milbrodale.
And, the 2018 ceremony, which will take place from 1pm at Gary Miller Memorial Park on Saturday, May 19, is expected to surpass any previous figure, according to one of the organisers, Marie Warby.
“It’s becoming more popular each year,” she said.
“It began as a slow burn – that first service boasted about 150 people.
“The commemorative wall, which has been going for almost a decade, was opened by former Upper Hunter MP George Souris in 2011.
“Now, the turnout’s increased to more than 1000.
“Ex-Singleton mayor John Martin OAM has been one of our popular guest speakers from the start.
“Even though he’s no longer in that position, he still makes an appearance.
“So, anyone – and everyone – is welcome to be a part of the day.
“More than 40 names adorn the wall now.
“It’s a nice way to recognise the truckies.
“There’ll also be a piper, selected guest speakers, entertainment, raffles, truck displays, Putty Road merchandise and refreshments.”
Mrs Warby admitted everyone loved the annual ritual.
“Although we have a very moving plaque and wreath laying ceremony to remember all the hard-working truckies Australia-wide, who have passed away, it is also a happy occasion to share memories with family and friends within the [trucking] industry,” she said.
“Afterwards, we’ll host the official dinner and auction at the Singleton Golf Club from 6.30pm.
“It’s a good chance to sit back and tell a few tales.
“And, boy, do some of the blokes do that,” she added with a laugh.
“Some of them drive thousands of miles to attend.”
Mrs Warby said the group also organised regular truck exhibits.
“My husband [Sunny] and his old B Model Mack and Freighter trailer are unique because he is the original owner after buying them both new in 1965 and working them until 2000,” she explained.
“It’s rare due to the fact he’s the only original owner of both as a unit in Australia.
“Sunny is 75 years young, however still works truck driving.
“Unfortunately, these days, his old Mack and trailer are relegated to the shed for a well-earned rest.
“But, they are brought out to attend many truck shows during the year, as Sunny and his ol’ Mack are well-known Australia-wide.
“Also, he, the truck and trailer are all now proudly registered as vintage models.”
