And, she was not kidding.
The dedicated Singleton Red Cross branch members are not going to let rain stop them from hosting their biggest fundraiser of the year.
They are baking up a storm and ready to set up their stalls at the historic Abbey Green just outside of Singleton.
So head out on Sunday from 10am until 3pm to support this worthwhile cause.
PREVIOUSLY: For over a decade the dedicated members of our local Red Cross have hosted their annual ‘Garden Call-in’ in some of Singleton’s most spectacular outdoor sanctuaries.
From Singleton’s historic Lonsdale residence on Dangar Road to the glorious rambling gardens of ‘Nevadun’ on Putty Road, the location is always idyllic.
And, this year is no exception with the owner of Abbey Green agreeing to partner with the Red Cross for their major fundraiser.
On Sunday March 25, from 10am until 3pm, the extensive lawns will be filled with a variety of stalls and there will be plenty of refreshments available.
Guests will be able to sit down to morning tea or coffee with a scone, jam, and cream - or relax while enjoying a light lunch along with the panoramic view.
President, Linda Frazer, says over the years the Singleton community has always generously supported their biggest fundraiser of the year.
The local branch host the garden call-in as opposed to door knocking.
“It does take quite a bit of organising but when you see everyone having a good day it is very rewarding,” she explains.
“We hope to raise between $7000 and $10 000 to support the ongoing vital international work Red Cross undertakes, like supporting those affected by violence in Rakhine State, including over 600,000 people, mostly women and children, who have fled to Bangladesh since late August this year.”
“We will be there; rain, hail, or shine as there are plenty of large verandahs to set up under.”
Abbey Green is situated approximately 5kms south of Singleton along Putty Road.
Look for the Red Cross signs and take care turning right across the oncoming traffic.
Entry fee is $5 per adult, children free.
This is also where the ladies will be drawing the winner of their raffle, appropriately first prize is a wheelbarrow full of gardening goodies along with Bunnings vouchers.
They will also be selling tickets at the upcoming Emergency Services Expo on Saturday, March 17, at Townhead Park.
Abbey Green
The main house is a typical brick and slate mid-Victorian building, with the bedrooms and living room grouped together, and surrounded on all four sides by wide verandahs featuring elegant wrought iron trims. The kitchen, pantry, scullyer and bathroom are a separate, adjacent buidling. A billiard room opposide the kictchen block completes the U-shaped arrangement around gardens and lawn.
More extensive lawns continue along one side and to the front of the house. Enormous shady fig and palm trees contribute to the unique charm of this spectacular property.
