Singleton Public Library will showcase a new exhibition this month featuring the famous and lesser known bushrangers who terrorised the Hunter Valley in the 1800’s, as part of Heritage Month.

Mark Wiblen, Council’s Manager Corporate and Community, said that bushranging is a quintessential Australian story and an essential talking point in our heritage.
"We are excited for people to see original crime records up close alongside photographs and actual items from the period, including Jimmy Governor’s original arrest warrant, and stories of lady bushranger Elizabeth Jessie Hickman, who was also known under five different aliases and was leader of her own gang,” he said.
"People will be fascinated to realise that Singleton and our surrounds were home to some notorious bushrangers, and by hearing their stories it really makes you question whether these men and women were 19th century 'Robin Hoods’ or just common crooks.
“The Library is an incredible resource for everyone to embrace and experience these stories, as they are brought to life and celebrated.
“Please join us for Heritage Month to celebrate the tales that have shaped our shared history in Singleton.”

Bushrangers of the Hunter Valley Exhibition
Meet the men and women who lived desperate and dangerous lives during the
Hunter Valley’s colonial years. Join us for a glass of wine and cheese as we launch this year’s Heritage Month Exhibition and learn about figures like horse breaker turned bushranger Captain Thunderbolt or circus performer turned cattle rustler Elizabeth Jessie Hickman.

Girt by History
Join David Hunt as he discusses his novels Girt Vol 1 and True Girt: The Unauthorised History of Australia Volume 2.
David is a bestselling author, historian and satirist whose ancestors settled in Singleton in the 1830s. David’s 2016 “Rum, Rebels & Ratbags” podcast with ABC Radio was one of Rolling Stone’s top four podcasts of the year.
