The aged care facility even hosted its own Royal Afternoon High Tea.
“Part of our job is to engage the residents in exciting events and find out what they would enjoy being part of,” Uniting lifestyle support coordinator Cathy Sheedy said.
“There was lots of talk among the residents about the wedding, so we decided to put on a Royal Afternoon High Tea.
“It was fabulous – and everyone loved it.
“In fact, it was wonderful to feel like we were all part of the event.”
The bagpipes being played heralded the arrival of the official royal party.
A staff member dressed up as Queen Victoria and she was escorted by her lady in waiting in white, followed by other members of the “Royal family” – Princess Sandra in a long green Scottish formal gown with sash, Princess Eileen in gold long dress, Prince Merton of Lawrence wearing a mourning suit, Princess Maureen of Hamilton, Princess Fergie in a stunning red long formal gown and Lady Betty in leopard fur and black hat.
Queen Victoria carried her orb and sceptre, wearing her crown, veil and sash adorned with official badges, black lace gloves and jewels for the neck and ears, while a royal robe completed the outfit.
Breaking with protocol, Queen Victoria then mixed with the guests determining who was the most loyal of subjects.
“Afternoon tea was then served – the royal kitchen staff really excelled themselves,” Ms Sheedy said.
“A three-tiered wedding cake was cut by her Majesty.
“The royal household staff also decorated the tables with gold cutlery and a sprinkling of gold stars.
“It was a most magical afternoon prior to the wedding of Harry and Meghan.
“The residents had a wonderful time and there were lots of positive comments.
“We took heaps of photos and heard plenty of laughing.
“It was great teamwork and fun.
“We’ll all remember it for quite some time.”
