While both Vesper and Charlotte Merrick will represent the Hunter at the NSWCHSSA Secondary Golf Championship in July.
The year nine Singleton High School students will play together at the Riverside Oaks Golf Resort during the three-day tournament which is a first for Merrick who competes each Saturday in our local junior competition.
She says Vesper has inspired her to “get serious” and play more “competitive golf”.
And although the pressure will be on, Merrick is focused on proving she can perform at this level.
In the long-term her aspirations include being involved in the Hunter Academy of Sports Golf program.
A program that recently led Vesper to the inaugural JNJG (Jack Newton Junior Golf) – RASi North vs South Cup.
Her mum, Melanie, says her daughter was on the winning North team.
“Only 24 kids across the state were selected from their regional academies of sport to compete and North came away with the win,” she says.
And in another exciting development, the talented young golfer has picked up a sponsor – Srixon.
Vesper explains they only select one person from each academy to sponsor.
“Every month I receive a supply of balls,” she confirms.
They will come in handy considering how much times she spends on the course both practicing and playing.
“I really want to play better at national championships later this year and help the team win,” she says.
Last December at just 13-years-of-age she played her part in the NSW U15’s CHS team picking up a bronze medal.
After that on her to-do-list is making the Australian team within the Golf NSW pathway.
