The students of St Catherine’s Catholic College are sending school supplies to secondary Catholic schools in Tonga.

The initiative was put forward by the Maitland-Newcastle Diocese, calling all students to donate books and other school resources such as stationery.
Librarian at St Catherine’s Gina Kellner says many of the school supplies were destroyed in a recent natural disaster.
“The school was devastated by a cyclone,” She says.
“They lost a lot of resources.”
Tropical cyclone Gita hit the islands of Tonga in February. It was the biggest cyclone to hit the nation in 60 years and left behind debris and flattened communities.
The students of St Cath’s are taking the opportunity and encouraging other students to donate.
Student leader Samuel O’Brien says all students should get involved.
“If every kid brings in one thing, it will make a difference,” he says.
The school supplies are currently being collected at St Catherine’s and will be sent to Tongan students in July.
