No doubt there was plenty of talk about how hard it was to prepare the cattle for this year’s event given grain and hay prices.
And everyone in attendance would have loved to be wearing gumboots but that’s life in rural Australia – its a tough business and this drought is proving to be one of the toughest on record.
How severe is the drought it’s a “confronting” situation in Coonabarabran as the town battles with its lowest water supply since 1964.
For one of the rising stars of the beef industry 14-year-old Caitlin Porter the 2018 Junior Show proved to be a great competition.
Caitlin won Champion Junior Parader, Champion Herdsman and Reserve Champion Steer with her entry M&M.
She was also awarded the Jim Maxwell Scholarship where she received $500 to go towards the costs of attending the 2019 Junior Show.
A keen Limousin steer exhibitor Caitlin has enjoyed success at various competitions with her entries that trade under the ‘Swimcreek’ name.
Her achievements come at a time when her hometown of Merriwa is battling through the ravages of the ongoing drought.
Her younger brother Clayton won Class 2- Juniors sponsored by Micanker Livestock in the paraders competition.
Senior Champion parader sponsored by Five Star Creative Promotions was won by Wingham’s Rachel Relf and Reserve Champion was Emily Polsen. Rachel, whose family operate the Warrigal Limousin stud, went onto win the grand champion paraders ribbon.
In the heifer classes Rachel was also very successful exhibiting the Senior Champion Heifer- Warrigal Foxy Lady and she also paraded the Reserve Junior Champion heifer - Ryradan Park Temptress N1.
Fellow Merriwa exhibitors members of Gill family, Alexander Downs, were also success ribbon winners in the paraders classes.
