After packing hampers for Lions Australia’s Need for Feed Disaster Relief program at Merriwa on Sunday, our local club fronted up to the historic pavilion at the Singleton showground on Monday to begin the mammoth task of setting up for their annual iconic ‘Book Sale’. Monday is always about laying the groundwork, on Tuesday the robust reinforcements from the Singleton School of Infantry arrive and the heavy lifting begins. But on Thursday they are always ready to go and this year will be no exception with the doors opening at 9 am. Dedicated co-ordinator Jenny Merrick says this year between 13 000 and 14 000 items, including books, magazine, CD’s and games, have been collected. For over a decade the Lions Club have been hosting the event after taking over from Lifeline and despite not raising their low prices, the popular event always generates a healthy profit. In the vicinity of $9000 is always donated back to local charity groups explains treasurer, Judy Langbien. “This year we are making a donation to the Singleton Cancer Appeal Committee,” she confirms.
