Held in the iconic ‘The Stables’ at Sydney Showground, Sydney Olympic Park, 14students were recognised as recipients of the RASF Rural Scholarships.
The scholarships were developed to assist rural-based students cover the cost of their tertiary studies in the hope that once they graduate they return to their communities with their newfound skills and qualifications.
Whether that is through agriculture, the health services or education fields, the RASF scholarships aim to see qualifications targeted to where there is often a void.
RASF Manager Cecilia Logan reflected on last night’s presentation and the worthy recipients;
“This year’s scholarship winners have demonstrated a drive and dedication towards not only their personal pursuits, but their local communities,” Ms Logan said.
“The RAS Foundation is committed to helping rural Australians realise their potential through education.
2018 rural scholar Milton Smith from Orange talked about the impact a helping hand can have on achieving his dreams within agriculture. Studying a Certificate III in Agriculture Milton has a keen interest in the sheep and beef industries.
“This has always been my main interest and lifelong dream. Thank you for your contribution to my studies and being the stepping stones to me becoming a farm manager,” he said.
Last night’s ceremony followed the RASF Armidale and Wagga Wagga presentations in the last few weeks. The Sydney group was addressed by founding benefactor Mr John B Fairfax AO who shared with the gathering his passion for the program.
“Life is a learning process and that’s why these scholarships are worthwhile,” Mr Fairfax said.
“I have seen young people cry with gratitude for the opportunity they may not otherwise have been able to afford and that alone has to be rewarding and that is why I get pleasure from seeing the growth of the Foundation,” he said.
Scholarships are awarded to students based on financial need and desire to live, work and contribute to country NSW, and offer $6,000 for full-time study or $3,000 for part-time study.
