Their enduring connection began when they had to watch one of their members – Bev Kifford (deceased) - travel to Newcastle three-times-a-week to receive dialysis.
This prompted them to fundraise and advocate for a service to be established in the late 80’s. Testament to their efforts in making this happen, the new renal unit is named in her honour.
Mrs Bryson says they discovered the expensive piece of equipment was needed when the new unit opened. However, she knew the small club would need help to cover the entire cost so she incorrectly applied to the Lions Foundation for a dollar-for-dollar grant.
“I filled out the paper work incorrectly but thanks to Ken’s gentle support we were successful and the Lions Club sponsored us,” she explains.
Mr Hallam is the Australian Lions Foundation national grants chairman and was at the handover on Friday morning.
