Singleton finished the season minor premiers and have only tasted defeat once this season, way back in Round 1 at home when Scone persevered 24 – 18.
They boast the best attack and defence in the competition, averaging almost 33 points per game whilst conceding just over nine points...
Since then the young Greyhounds have taken all before them, remaining undefeated and stretching a winning streak that now sits at 15 games. They have defeated Scone on three occasions since, 20 – 6 at Scone Park, 26 – 4 at Pirtek Park and more recently 28 – 18 in the major semi.
But after finishing runners-up in at least the past two U18 grand-finals, premierships are most certainly earned not given so Singleton will be hoping to go one better and secure a coveted junior’s title. Coach Daniel Higgins once again has a large squad to work in coming up with the right balance to get the job done on Sunday.
If success comes there way, it can be safely said that every player in that squad will have contributed to that success. They boast the best attack and defence in the competition, averaging almost 33 points per game whilst conceding just over nine points. The season’s top try scorer has been 17-year-old fullback Brendon Chalker, a former Knights junior who has crossed the line for 17 tries. Chalker is a real threat every time he touches the ball.
Centre Hayden Bourke is another tackle busting machine who scored 14 tries and kicked 39 goals for good measure. He is another player expected to perform well.
The injection of Knights S.G.Ball half-back Kobe Davies - another local product - has given the team much needed direction and he is armed with a great kicking, passing and running game. Davies is the complete package.
With Chalker, Bourke, Davies and Bailey Schultz all tasting first grade this year, the Dog’s have the ammunition to put this game out of reach.
But like most games it will come down to Singleton’s ability to lay the platform through their hard-working unfashionable forward pack. Hooker Blake Trees has been in outstanding form of late and is a key man in the middle.
If Singleton’s big men can eat up the metres in the middle and hold a strong Scone forward pack, then victory can be theirs.
