For Kel a long serving volunteer at the RFS and currently a member of the Whittingham brigade it will be the first time he has competed at the championships which are held every two years.
He will be joined on the trip south by his wife Cynthia, also a Whittingham RFS member, and while Kel competes she will be assisting with the cadet competitions.
There are around 16 events at the championships all designed to improve the skills of the volunteers.
In Temora Kel expects one of the tasks he has to undertake as part of the chainsaw competition will be dropping a 12 metre pole within a 500m area.
“Another task will be turning a stump into garden furniture,” he said.

As member of the RFS for around three decades Kel is a fireline chainsaw operator – which means he is one of the senior operators in the local organisation.
Given his knowledge and skills with a chainsaw he is a RFS district chainsaw trainer.
