Singleton’s Broadway star Byron Fletcher has only recently returned home from his second scholarship trip to New York for the Broadway Junior All stars in September, and has already received another scholarship to for next milestone in his on stage career.
The seventeen-year-old has begun his final year of schooling at Saint Catherine’s College this term and is readily preparing for his Higher School Certificate major works and exams in 2019 whilst also double timing as an international performer ‘here and there’.
In New York, Byron was the only Australian cast member with the all star elite cast who performed My Fair Lady at the 52nd Street Project.
On top of their own performance, the troop attended many other Broadway shows, toured the Big Apple and “relaxed and enjoyed the holiday” as Byron said.
“Coming back from New York and the industry is a little saddening but I also love school and my life here and am keen for the oncoming final year of my education” Byron told us.
Whilst in New York for his second time, Byron was notified of the acceptance of a scholarship application he placed earlier in the year through his school with renowned theater company, Bell Shakespeare.
“The company emailed my drama teacher, father and me and it’s safe to say we were all very ecstatic” said Byron.
Bell Shakespeare is Australia’s only national theater and aims to prove that Shakespeare and the great works are not an end in themselves through specialising in the works of William Shakespeare, his contemporaries and other classics.
Byron is one of twelve students who were selected to star in the production across Australia and will soon head to Sydney for several days to prepare with the company and cast for Julius Caesar.
On top of preparing for his oncoming studies, Byron has already put thought into his after school education and has begun university preparation workshops to audition for the National Institute of Dramatic Arts (NIDA) in Sydney.
“Staff from NIDA were there to explain to us basically how awesome the whole place is, how we should be preparing throughout the next year but mainly stay focused on our school studies” Byron explained.
