The response demonstrates the local community support for the Cancer Council advocacy campaign, which calls on the next NSW Government to take action for a cancer-free future.
These postcards were signed at various events, including Dungog, Muswellbrook and Singleton Relays for Life, and online.
By signing a Saving Life 2019 postcard, locals are showing Mr Johnsen the ways in which we can support people with lymphoedema, protect the community from tobacco, and tackle childhood obesity.
UHCAN chairperson Sarah Lukeman said since the Saving Life 2019 campaign was launched in July, more than 12,500 people across NSW have indicated their support by signing a postcard.
“We are thrilled with the support from the Upper Hunter electorate,” she said.
“The number of postcards we have received show just how many people care about the issues presented in Saving Life 2019 and the importance of bringing these to the attention of the next NSW Government.”
By delivering the signed postcards to Mr Johnsen, Cancer Council hopes to generate support so that the NSW Government will adopt one or more of the Saving Life 2019 priorities as party policy in the lead up to the NSW election.
“Saving Life 2019 outlines the most important opportunities for the next NSW Government to reduce the impact of cancer on the community,” Ms Lukeman said.
“With Mr Johnsen’s and the community’s support, we can influence decision-making and get one step closer to a cancer free future.”
Upper Hunter residents can continue to back the campaign by visiting www.canact.com.au or attending a Saving Life 2019 forum at the Muswellbrook Race Club on February 4, from 7pm, to mark World Cancer Day.
“We’re pleased that sitting member for Upper Hunter Michael Johnsen, and a number of other candidates standing for the seat, will join us to hear about our Saving Life 2019 agenda and outline the role they will play, if elected, in bringing about the changes needed for our community,” Ms Lukeman added.
To RSVP to the Upper Hunter Saving Life 2019 forum, contact community programs coordinator Glen Parsons at Cancer Council’s Singleton office on 0428 101 252 or glenp@nswcc.org.au by January 25.
