Good quality lucerne hay is selling for between $400-$450/tonne and oaten hay from $$320-$360/tonne which equates to around $15-$17/small square bale and $140-160/round bale.
Demand last winter across NSW and Queensland saw four to five years of hay reserves in Victoria and South Australia cleaned out as demand was so great from drought affected livestock producers.
The advice as always is to ensure you are buying quality hay that poses no health risks to stock or the introduction of weeds.
Unfortunately for some landholders, who have been lucky to receive some decent rain in the last two months, they are now finding unwelcome weeds in their paddocks where they fed out hay during the height of the drought.
