A magnificent seven local swimmers have qualified for the state tournament following recent success at the Coast and Valley Championships.
“We’re very confident with our girls at the 13 (and over) age bracket and they’ll finish on Wednesday,” Geale explained.
“The difference with the kids this time around is they divide them into heats and finals.”
“Most of them are vying for qualifying times for the national age championships which will be held in April next year in South Australia.”
“They are very close at the moment and hopefully we can obtain those times.”
Singleton will be represented by Charlie O’Bryan, Harrison Geale, Isaak Small, Mackenzie Gray, Jemma Earnshaw, Alice Small and Alix O’Bryan across the six day event which commences today.
“The opposing Sydney kids will go in as favourites because they have the resources that our country kids don’t have but we are still competitive there’s no doubt about it,” she added.
“You start to see the nature of this group as time goes by.”
“You see the ones that want it and you also know the ones that have the talent but just haven’t realised the amount of work required.”
“Talent gets you so far but as time goes by you have to put the hard yards on to keep the talent alive and .”
Singleton finished the top ten for points in the Coast and Valley Championships to the delight of their head coach.
“I don’t think we’ve that high for a long long time so it’s a real achievement for a small town,” Geale continued.
“It’s a tough thing to get them prepared for the state champs two weeks later given where we are in our training program.”
“But everyone got a personal best time, they were happy and the coach was happy as well.”
