For the first time, Hunter Valley Group 21 Junior Rugby League will host representative trials at Muswellbrook’s Olympic Park next month.

The 2019 under-14 and under-16 hit-outs are scheduled to take place on Tuesday, March 26, from 6.30pm.  

“It’s great for the region,” NRL game development officer – Central Hunter NSW Daniel Swan said.

“For the past three seasons, league tag has grown in popularity, especially in Group 21.

“In fact, this area is at the forefront of the code.

“And, the players – and their parents – have been crying out for a chance to develop their skills further.

“This is now that moment.

“I’m expecting every junior club – including Denman, Greta Branxton, Merriwa, Muswellbrook, Scone and Singleton – to be involved.”

Swan said the future of women’s league, from league tag to the CRL Nines and NRLW, was in strong hands.

“The participation, and coverage, of the game has definitely lifted,” he explained.

“Plus, league tag is a good stepping stone – or pathway – into tackle.

“I’m anticipating about 100 girls in each age group at the upcoming trials.

“Four years ago, they weren’t even playing a match.

“Now, they can dream of a rep berth.

“So, it’s a natural progression.

“We’ve contacted all the local clubs, too, who’ve been really supportive.

“We are also seeking some coaches for the under-14 and under-16 teams.

“Anyone interested can apply for those roles.”

The inaugural Group 21 junior league tag rep sides could possibly tackle either Group 3 or Group 19 in the coming months.

“It’s an exciting time for the young girls,” Swan said.

“And, they deserve an opportunity to shine.”
