Branxton was transformed when the Hunter Expressway was opened in March 2014 and all the traffic using the New England Highway was removed from its main street.
In August 2017 a community workshop was held and the community provided initial input into the development of the Public Domain Plan and the Development Control Plan which proposes significant improvements to the Branxton Town Centre including new pavements, street tree planting, a new public square and upgrades to the Branxton Oval car park.
The community were consulted again in October 2018, to provide feedback on the draft plans ahead of them going to Council. There was great interest from the community with around 40 residents attending the session. Council staff considered the feedback and made changes to both plans to better reflect the community’s vision.
Cessnock City Mayor, Councillor Bob Pynsent said it was wonderful so see so many residents keen to be involved in the future of their wonderful town. “The response from the community was fantastic. The input of the residents has been extremely valuable and it’s great to be able to put these plans on exhibition.” Council has already secured over $400,000 of state government funding to start work in Branxton including pavement improvements and a new public square. These works will start following consideration of community suggestions and the Councils adoption of the Plans later this year.
Council will be holding a public information session at the Branxton Golf Course on Thursday, February 28 from 3pm to 7.30pm. Residents are encouraged to attend.
The exhibition is running until Wednesday, March 20 and is available for view at the following locations.
