ELEVEN year old Maronay Smuts from Singleton Heights Public School smashed the 50m freestyle record at the regional PSSA swimming carnival last Tuesday.

The year six student, who recorded a personal best of 33.72 seconds, placed second in the competition and admits that she is both nervous and excited for the Sydney based State Championships in early April.
"My goal was to swim under 34 seconds at the regional carnival and also to make state for my last primary swimming carnival," young Maronay explained.
"So coming second with a personal best time of 33.72 made me very happy."
Swimming is not the only sport Maronay blitz's.
She is a sports star on land too, achieving state level in PSSA cricket last year as well as participating in out of school sports such as athletics, rugby union, touch football, tennis and more.
Maronay made it from zone to regionals for every single event in her age category, resulting in a full day of competitive swimming for the youngster.
"I was in every event except the relay which was full on as I was competing against some thirteen year old girls in the senior swims" she added.
An eager learner as well as sport star, Maronay claims her favourite subjects at school are PDHPE and Mathematics.
"I love swimming and have a passion for sport and I just love to represent my school at any level for any event," she said.
"I guess I find myself quiet competitive and get it from my family."
She exclaims her excitement for the school cross country and athletics and is eagerly preparing for the two events that are quickly approaching.
"Javelin is my favourite athletic event but I have to wait until high school for that one"
Maronay thanks her family for the support they have given her in her sporting achievements and the opportunities that her school provides for her with support her piers and teachers.
"Mr Graham our principal told me that I was the first state qualifier for this school in a very long time which made me very happy," she added.
